Local History and Culture

Workshop

Workshop Description

Rhythm and Music

Rhythm and music making workshops using drums, sounds and

instruments from different cultures relevant to Sheffield eg.

African drums, Indian/Asian Styles, Eastern European folk

sounds, brass, modern rock and hip-hop sounds.

Song Writing

Song-writing workshops exploring local industries, festivals and

modern life using traditional folk melodies and

modern sounds.

Rap

Rap workshops exploring daily life in Sheffield using the

Rhythms /beats from different cultural groups mixing languages

and using local dialect.

Generations

From one Generation to another – adults and young people

working with musicians and song-writers to create a dialogue

using different musical styles and recording a track

together.

'Rock and Dhol'

Bhangra dance workshops, a chance to have a go at Bhangra dance.

World Dance

Including African/Indian ( 2 separate workshops) dance styles. A chance to have a go at African and Indian dance.

African drumming

A chance to have a go at African Drumming

Terrace Poetry

Taking Sheffield football chants and using rhythm, pace and tone, turn them into performance pieces.

Roma music and tradition

learning the Roma National Anthem, raising awareness of the Roma Community –Who are they?

Roma Art

Art work based on Roma traditions and communities.

No more laykin for thee tonait”

using Sheffield dialect and accent to produce fun and entertaining poetry and song – Study of the local dialect through rhyme.

"Pulling together”

Performances based on the Sheffield floods

Then and now”

Artwork based on the changing landscape of Sheffield. The old buildings mixed with the new, modern architecture.

Music-scene

Recording and disseminating a ‘Podcast’ about Sheffield bands, and the Sheffield music scene, old and new.

Steel City

Inter-generational project to make a short film based on older relatives memories of growing up in Sheffield.

Workshop

Workshop Description

Physical Theatre

Includes exploring Basic slapstick comedy techniques and

Commedia Del Arte.

Games and play

A session aimed at creative group play and playing games for

different purposes, fun, concentration or energy.

Trust and teamwork

Working together in small groups on a given project to produce

a theatrical outcome using trust exercises.

Directing & Devising

Directing short plays/ devising your own theatre. Exploring the craft of theatre, writing and directing.

Mask Work/Mime

The use of mask and stock character techniques. Using mime

to tell a story.

Performance poetry

Writing and performing poetry. Designed to get young people

speaking and listening confidently and creatively as part of a

team or singularly.

Shakespeare

An introduction to Shakespeare, using short, accessible scripts

leading to the performance of short scenes.

Confidence & self esteem

Designed to help young people to become positive thinkers and

have confidence in themselves.

World Dance

African Drumming, learn about the types of drums and ways of

Working with groups to design simple modern dance routines

with warm-ups and cool-downs and equip them with a basic

vocabulary of steps to use.

Set & costume design

Following a brief to create designs for staging and character

costumes.

Creative literacy

Creating written work through Drama eg. script-writing

Learning drawing and Painting techniques such as sketching,

composition,colour mixing and creating painted effects.

Musical instrument making using household objects

Learning African vocal techniques

Digital art workshop to produce a design based on Islamic

calligraphy. To gain IT skills in Photoshop.

Animating Islamic

To produce an animation based on Islamic patterns, using

Photoshop and Flash.

Young people making music videos for participants of music

workshops (using CD’s recorded) and utilising film and stop

motion animation.
